Drama school is not just for children, which the Groundlings Theatre in Portsea have set out to prove when their adult students perform 19th century classic Hedda Gabler from Wednesday, March 11-21.
Thrilling, enigmatic and destructive, Hedda Gabler is one of theatre’s most irresistible heroines.
Returning from her honeymoon and already bored with her marriage to her academic husband, Hedda finds herself caught between the brilliant but dissolute Eilert Lovborg, a rival of her husband, and the clutches of the predatory Judge Brack.
The role of Hedda is one of the leading parts for women in the theatre, with Oscar-winning actresses Ingrid Bergman, Maggie Smith and Cate Blanchett all taking on the part. Kirsty Malloy is the actress who will bring Hedda to life in this production.
Hedda Gabler was published in 1890 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It premiered in 1891 in Germany to negative reviews, but has gained recognition as a classic of realism and 19th century theatre.
Performances at 8pm. Tickets: £10-12, book online at groundlings.co.uk or call the box office on (023) 9273 7370.
