Welsh National Opera will begin its visit to the Southampton Mayflower with Alban Berg’s Lulu tonight.

The title role will be sung by Marie Arnet in a new production by the company’s new chief executive and artistic director, David Pountney, with music director Lothar Koenigs conducting.

Pountney says: ‘Everyone is drawn to Lulu, intoxicated by her. Those in her thrall are like moths to a flame. Her flame burns bright and fast but sooner or later it will be extinguished by the very things it once fed upon.’

WNO will also revive Pountney’s production of The Cunning Little Vixen, by Janacek (Thursday), and Joachim Herz’s acclaimed Puccini production, Madam Butterfly (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).

Lulu and Madam Butterfly will be sung in the original languages with English surtitles, The Cunning Little Vixen in English. Lulu begins at 7pm, the others at 7.15pm.

Tickets cost £7.50 to £40 from the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton on (023) 8071 1811 or go to
