The Four Weddings And A Funeral actor, Simon Callow, will be arriving at Chichester Festival Theatre this week to perform Charles Dicken’s one-man plays, Dr Margiold & Mr Chops.
Dr Marigold is a travelling salesman who adopts a deaf and dumb girl, while Mr Chops is a freak show performer who wins the lottery, and a place for himself in society.
Simon first decided to perform the plays at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008, although many of his friends believed they wouldn’t work.
Having previously spoken to The Guide, he says: ‘People said it wouldn’t do well, that it was too old fashioned, but it has been successful.
‘It’s going great, and I love touring very much.’
Simon has never been one to shy away from new ventures, having written countless books and directed in the past, and has recently appeared as a judge in the second series of Popstar To Operastar on ITV.
He adds: ‘I very much admire the popstars who do it. They all worked very, very hard and nobody pretends that they are ready to sing opera.’
Simon will be coming to Portsmouth for the first time in February to celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens.
Tickets cost £12 to £28 from Chichester Festival Theatre on (01243) 781312 or go to cft.org.uk.
