Southampton will get a taste of Hollywood glamour and tap shoes next week, with the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers 1935 classic, Top Hat.
Strictly Come Dancing Champion 2008, Tom Chambers, will star alongside actress Summer Strallen, who took over Connie Fisher’s role of Maria in The Sound Of Music and is a triple Olivier Award nominee.
The re-make will be the first time the musical has been performed on stage, with the original film being Astaire and Rogers’ most successful onscreen partnership, achieving second place in worldwide box offices in 1935.
It tells the story of an American dancer, Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire), who comes to London to appear in the West End, and while practising his tap dancing routine, wakes up the girl of his dreams, Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers).
Classic songs featured in the musical include Cheek To Cheek, Let’s Face The Music And Dance, Caught In The Rain and Top Hat, White Tie and Tails.
The production runs from September 13 – 24.
