Two graduates have set up a theatre company in Portchester to help young people reach their full potential through forms of performance and creativity.

Business partners, Carley Dawson, 23 and Stevie Williams, 22, have launched BeeCreative, using their passion for creative arts as a means to support those who suffer from low self-esteem and mental health issues.

Aimed predominantly at children and adolescents, their confidence through drama classes are held at Portchester Community Centre and have been going from strength to strength.

The workshop includes an array of exercises that help children break out of their shells and to become more confident in their everyday lives. Such techniques include improvisation, poetry with projection and breath control.

Carley said: ‘Having both completed a degree in performance along with many other performative achievements, we wanted to use those skills and our passion to interact with, and help others.

‘We feel low self-esteem and mental health is something that can be aided through creative practice, and having both had experience in these areas found it very important to focus on these topics.’

Tora Eastwood, a parent of an attendee, said how valuable coming to BeeCreative has been for her daughter and how she has grown in confidence since she began the classes.

She said: ‘I feel that she has really moved forward with this and will happily show me and talk to me about the exercises she does with great enthusiasm, it has given her an emotional language to help her to express herself.

BeeCreative plans to set up classes in a number of locations. There are also plans to publish all sorts of books from children’s books, to full length fiction and self-help books for eating disorders.

Bee Creative runs every Monday from 4pm-6pm at Portchester Community Centre, in Westlands Grove.
