Drag and ballet don’t seem like obvious bedfellows.
But Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and its hirsute ballerinas have entertained audiences around the globe for 41 years.
The New York-based company will be gracing the Mayflower Theatre’s stage with their size 12 pointe shoes tonight and tomorrow.
They will be performing a comedic medley of Swan Lake Act II, a duet from Corsaire, Go For Barocco and close with Don Quixote.
Robert Carter joined the company in November 1995, and like every cast member he has a male and female character. ‘Although no-one joins the company for the male character,’ he jokes.
Every dancer has to learn typically female steps, including dancing en pointe.
‘If you have the technique it isn’t hard – men are usually more muscular, especially in the lower body, so if anything it’s an advantage,’ he says.
Tickets for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are £25-£32, visit mayflower.org.uk or call (023) 8071 1811.
