Dictionary definition of ‘wassail’: ‘Lively festivities involving the drinking of much alcohol’.

Well, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas concert at Portsmouth Guildhall has the title ‘Wassail’ - but we suspect the boozing will be restricted to the interval.

The BSO merely promises ‘festive cheer and an unashamed celebration of the traditional Christmas’ in a new format for its seasonable concert.

Also taking part will be the New Scorpion Band, playing a wide range of old instruments, reciting memories of Christmas past from Thomas Hardy and others, and performing an old-style mummers’ play.

Popular carols will also be featured, with music by composers such as Vaughan Williams and Warlock. Pete Harrison conducts the BSO.

Tickets cost £13 to £23 from (023) 8282 4355 or
