Nuffield, Southampton’s producing theatre, has been named as Regional Theatre of the Year at a top theatre awards ceremony in London.
The company was presented with the award at The Stage Awards held at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Friday, January 30.
Nuffield beat Leicester’s Curve and the Ustinov Studio at Bath Theatre Royal to the top prize and was recognised by the judges for the work it has produced in the last year.
Foremost among the projects was Tonight at 8.30, an ambitious staging of Noel Cowardʼs entire cycle of nine one-act plays, and The Saints, a drama about Southampton FC which had a pop-up stage designed to look like a football stadium. They noted that while in its 50th year Nuffield is ‘undergoing something of a renaissance’.
Nuffield’s director Sam Hodges says: ‘This award is a wonderful endorsement of all the hard work the company has done over the last year and the risks it has made.’
