A much-loved BBC television favourite is coming to Hayling Island next week courtesy of the Hayling Musical Society.

The local am-dram group will be performing its version of Acorn Antiques – The Musical by Victoria Wood .

The show is an all-singing extravaganza about an antiques shop in Manchesterford, populated by colourful characters such as the ever-popular Mrs Overall, the shop’s truculent cleaning lady.

The musical follows the lives of sisters Miss Babs and Miss Berta, struggling to keep their antiques business open as shop after shop on the High Street closes down.

A devious stranger, Miss Bonnie, plans to sell the shop to The Guilty Bean, the world’s second biggest chain of coffee shops.

First seen on BBC television more than 25 years ago, written by Victoria Wood and starring Julie Walters, Acorn Antiques has remained a firm favourite of the nation ever since.

The show comes to the Hayling Community Centre on Station Road, Hayling Island from Wednesday March 5 until Saturday March 8, with performances starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets: £10 on Wednesday and £12 Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

For an extra £3 audience members can come and enjoy a cup of tea and a macaroon from 6.45pm before the performance.
