December 4, 1956. It’s a date that will forever be remembered as the day that four of the greatest rock stars got together.
Now, the story of that night at Sun Records in Memphis has been made into a musical and it’s come to the Mayflower.
It tells the tale of the union of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis – all of whom had or would go on to work with studio owner Sam Phillips, played excellently by veteran stage star Jason Donovan.
Each of the actors who play the musicians have got their individual mannerisms mastered but the star was award-winner Martin Kaye who played the role of eccentric Jerry Lee Lewis.
At this point, Jerry had not yet hit the big time and it was this jam session which gave him a chance to show off his talents.
Not only was he an excellent pianist and entertaining performer, but he was the comedian in the production too.
At the end, the audience were treated to some of the quartet’s best hits and everyone was up on their feet.
Million Dollar Quartet is a fascinating and entertaining insight into one of the most interesting nights in music history and is worth a watch.
