Full of feathers and toy soldiers, enchanted princesses and trickery, the sound of lightly-treading ballet shoes and ruffling tutus will arrive at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from February 7-12.
The Russian State Ballet of Siberia is touring the UK for the ninth time with four classic ballets.
Every child’s favourite fairy tale, the classic Sleeping Beauty will be performed, set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score.
Recreated by Alexander Gorsky, Le Fille Mal Gardée remains one of the oldest ballets still regularly performed, and tells the tale of the love between Lise and Colas, and Lise’s efforts to thwart her overly possessive mother’s plan to marry her off to a rich, unattractive vineyard owner.
The company will also perform Swan Lake, the romantic tale of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.
The last of the productions will be The Nutcracker. A young girl is whisked away to a world with an army of toy soldiers, and a Nutcracker who’s transformed into a handsome prince.
Formed in 1981, The Russian State Ballet of Siberia is established as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies. Music director and chief conductor is Anatoly Tchepurnoi, while artist director is Sergei Bobrov.
Sleeping Beauty will be performed on February 7, La Fille Mal Gardée on February 8, Swan lake on February 9-10, and The Nutcracker February 11-12.
Tickets cost £14.50 to £31.50 from the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton on (023) 8017 1811 or go to mayflower.org.uk.
