Thundering rhythms, mysterious choreography and inventive lighting will bring drummers to life at the Kings Theatre, Southsea, tonight.
With post-apocalyptic martial imagery, the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers will perform in full costume. They use an array of percussion instruments as well as gongs, bells and the bamboo flute.
Originally from Japan, the energetic and highly choreographed traditional art form has been developed by Mugenkyo, the UK’s first and only professional touring Taiko group.
Last year the group performed in more than 80 venues across the UK, and in Japan and the Middle East.
The year was an important one for the members as the two founders, Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams, celebrated 20 years since first visiting Japan and discovering all about the dance.
This milestone makes Mugenkyo the longest touring and most successful Taiko group. In 2014 it will be celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Tickets: £16.50 to £19.50 from the Kings Theatre, Southsea, on (023) 9282 8282 or go to kings-southsea.com.
