There will be a distinctly eastern atmosphere at the Kings when it hosts The Russian State Ballet and Opera House this Sunday.
Accompanied by a live orchestra with over 30 musicians, the company will be performing the Nutcracker with music by Tchaikovsky, one of Russia’s most famous composers.
Producer Alexej Ignatow has brought the show to Portsmouth as part of a UK tour. He says: ‘We feel that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy ballet in their lifetime, which is why we are dedicated to presenting full and positive new productions in regional theatres.
‘We want to give the opportunity to local audiences to experience these classics, give them great pleasure and inspire them to want more.
‘There is a misconception that you need to understand music or ballet to enjoy them but it is really for everyone.
‘All these incredible performances are self-explanatory and you can be assured of falling in love with ballet.’
The Christmas story is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
The Nutcracker tells the story of Marie, who is cheered up by her godfather Drosselmeyer when he gives her a Nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve.
Having crept downstairs at midnight to play with her new Nutcracker doll, Marie is swept up in a festive adventure when it comes magically to life.
With the aid of a box full of toy soldiers under the Christmas tree, Marie and the Nutcracker defeat the army of the evil Mouse King who has invaded her house.
Alexej explains what makes his company so unique.
‘We stand out because we pay attention to detail and put a lot of effort into choosing the best artists.
‘I know that there are many companies that come together just to tour in the UK, but we only focus on working with established theatres in the Russian Federation.
‘With Russian ballet, you get passion.’
The Russian State Ballet and Opera House will be coming to Portsmouth, Kings Theatre on Sunday November 16 at 7.30 pm to perform The Nutcracker.
