The friendship between renowned composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein and the Dean of Chichester Walter Hussey is celebrated in a new play at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester.
Devised by Peter McEnery, who also features in this one-man show, Walter & Lenny is an insight into this unexpected friendship and its delightful consequences.
In 1963, Hussey wrote to Bernstein asking if he would compose a piece of choral music for the upcoming Southern Cathedrals Festival.
His request led to the composition of a new choral work, Chichester Psalms.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the work, which received its world premiere at the Philharmonic Hall in New York in July 1965, followed by a performance at Chichester Cathedral two weeks later.
Peter McEnery returns to Chichester following previous appearances in Dangerous Corner, A Doll’s House and A Little Night Music (also West End).
Leonard Bernstein remains best-known for his music for the award-winning West Side Story.
Walter & Lenny will be at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester from November 11–14.
Tickets £15. To book go to cft.org.uk or call the box office on 01243 781312.
