Older motorists have a wealth of experience, confidence and tolerance. However, sight, hearing, reaction time and judgment of speed and distance may not be as sharp as it once was.

Casualty rates do increase for car drivers aged over about 65, and the fatality rate increases significantly.

This is where the Older Drivers’ Forum comes in. The group is made up of experts in road safety across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight with representatives from the emergency services, charities, local authorities and businesses who specialise in keeping older drivers on the road.

The organisation is about keeping mature motorists on the road safely for longer. Whether that’s helping give you practical and informative help and support to continue driving or pointing you in the right direction for an assessment to identify your driving needs, from wing mirror adapters to an elevated driving seat.

For more information on the Older Drivers’ Forum then visit olderdriversforum.com where you can find advice on courses, renewing your licence and useful videos to keep you safe on the road.

To help older motorists Hampshire County Council runs a scheme called Driver Skills Scheme 60+ who, for a fee of £31.50, will come to your house and go out with you in your own car for 90 minutes to give you an appraisal.  It is not a test but good advice may be gained from it.

The next meeting of the Warsash Residents’ Association will be held in the Bartholomew Room at the Victory Hall at 7.15pm tonight.

The guest speaker will be Helen Sosnowski from Coldeast Conservation Volunteers at Sarisbury Green Fareham.

She will be giving a short talk and showing before and after pictures of the different areas of undeveloped green spaces on the Old Coldeast Hospital site, including the long hidden apple orchard, clearance of scrub to reinstate meadows, the pond and works to upgrade footpaths and streams.

The site will eventually be handed over to Fareham Borough Council to manage and maintain.

New members are always welcomed and membership to Warsash Residents’ Association is £4 a year.
