Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea, REVIEW: ‘Perfectly executing a fiery brand of rock’n’roll’

I remember opening The Face magazine once and a band’s picture literally jumped from the page, coupled with the fact they were called Zodiac Mindwarp and The Love Reaction – I needed no encouragement to go out the next day and buy the album.

I suspect I will do exactly the same with the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Indeed there are a fair few of the crowd here just because of the name, who along with fellow Australian cousins King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, follow a fine tradition.

There's a healthy crowd in tonight which for a Monday is no mean feat. The mosh pit starts off small but perfectly formed and the band kick into gear. The Perth-born band have travelled thousands of miles for the the first night of their first headlining tour and they seem genuinely humbled by the enthusiastic response.

Possibly the hairiest band since New Zealand-based band The Datsuns graced the stage several years ago, they are a well-oiled machine perfectly executing a fiery brand of rock’n’roll that's becomes more infectious with each song. At one point a cheeky Lenny Kravitz riff is sneaked into the fray and the crowd become more fervent.

By the time of the set closed with Cornflake, the mosh pit has grown to a sweaty mass with the first crowd surfers being hoisted above the crowd. The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets do exactly what it says on the tin: no-nonsense, hi-octane rock played at breakneck speed. Absolutely perfect.??????????????????????????????????????????
