Review: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at The Mayflower, Southampton

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one of my favourite childhood films, so I was curious to see if the musical production of Ian Fleming's classic would live up to my expections.

The whole production, like its leading lady, was Truly Scrumptious – as well as funny and full of surprises.

Seeing Chitty fly on stage, surrounded by the beauty of The Mayflower was a real magical moment, the creative set and the lighting made it three-dimensional.

Amy Griffiths (Scrumptious) makes the show her own, her version of Doll on a Music Box is simply exquisite. Jason Manford as crazy inventor Caractacus Potts brings pluck and maturity as the loveable father of two, but it’s menacing Martin Kemp who stands out, as the evil childcatcher.

I had to hide behind my hands at one point.

With so many performers in the show it’s impossible to mention them all, but trust me, they are all rather wonderful.

If you haven’t got a ticket yet do so Toot Sweets, it’s sure to be a sell-out.

Until Sunday, February 21.
