Women's art exhibition to commemorate the end of First World War

An exhibition of female artists from across the borough will be opening at Holy Trinity Church in Trinity Green next month, dedicated to how the end of the First World War transformed the lives of women in Britain.

The exhibition, called Celebrating and Commemorating 100 Years, came from Gosport artist Vikki Matthews, who has done a number of art exhibitions at the church in the past.

She says that the story of what happened to women after the First World War is still largely untold, and hopes that this exhibition may help to bring it to the forefront.

Vikki said: '˜For the past three or four years I have been doing art exhibitions at the church '“ it's a beautiful building and a lot of people go to visit it.

'˜This year I thought that it would be nice to do something to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War '“ but wanted to do something a little bit different.

'˜There are so many things that affected women after the end of the war so a number of us decided to get together and create a special commemorative exhibition to show that in a bit more detail.'

A total of 10 artists are collaborating on the project, which Vikki hopes will get people to think more about the plight of women after the First World War '“ as well as appreciate some of Gosport's most stunning scenery.

She said: '˜As well as commemorating the end of the First World War we will also be celebrating some of Gosport's scenery '“ it is a beautiful place with some wonderful scenery.'

The exhibition will be launched at a VIP launch event at the church tomorrow, and will run until October 10.
