BAE secures new deal in Portsmouth to support the Royal Navy

DEFENCE company BAE Systems has signed a new deal to provide the Royal Navy with cutting-edge technology for the next decade.

The firm has extended its combat systems integration services. The deal will cover the £6bn fleet of Type 45 destroyers, as well as the new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and the Type 26 global combat ship.

The work will be led by BAE’s combat systems engineers at the company’s Maritime Integration Support Centre facility at Portsdown Technology Park.

Richard Williams, BAE’s combat systems director, said the contract would play a vital part in boosting the navy’s fighting prowess for the next 10-and-a-half years.

‘It will ensure the UK’s highly complex and capable surface ships remain at peak operational performance, able to deploy the latest technology in support of the nation’s requirements long into the future,’ Mr Williams said.

The deal is part of a £109m agreement revealed last week which secured 280 jobs at QinetiQ, in the city.
