Brittany says new super ferry will provide a sustainable future

A FERRY firm is setting sail for a sustainable future.

In 2019, Brittany Ferries will be led by an LNG-powered ferry called Honfleur.

The firm aims to deliver a vehicle powered by cleaner fuel without a refuelling infrastructure.

Honfleur will be the first passenger ship in the world that features on board cranes, allowing 40ft LNG containers to be lifted in a step towards ‘power delivery’, a more sustainable process.

LNG emits less carbon dioxide during combustion and burns with no smoke.

Brittany Ferries CEO, Christophe Mathieu said:

‘Refuelling infrastructure is key to the uptake of cleaner fuels like LNG, throughout the transport sector,

‘But we cannot wait for widespread storage in ports to deliver the next generation of cleaner vessels.

‘Our team has addressed this problem in an innovative way and combined it with more efficient power delivery.

‘I believe Honfleur will be the most environmentally-friendly ship regularly operating in the Channel upon delivery in 2019.’
