Charities missing out on donations because of GDPR confusion, Portsmouth mailing firm says

A MAIL firm which handles accounts for charities has said its clients are losing out on donations because of new data protection rules.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), introduced on May 25, states recipients of marketing emails and telephone calls are required to opt in to mailing lists.

However, charities fall under the '˜legitimate interest' section of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidelines '“ and The Mailing People, based in Farlington, Portsmouth, claims sources have reported these guidelines have been misunderstood. 

Charities allegedly contacted their databases prior to May 25, requesting they re-opt in to  communications, despite not being required to.

In turn, The Mailing People said they have heard claims charities' diligence has lost them supporters. '‹'‹
