CharitiesÂ missing out on donations because of GDPR confusion, Portsmouth mailing firm says
A MAIL firm which handles accounts for charitiesÂ has said its clients are losing out onÂ donations because of new data protectionÂ rules.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), introduced on May 25,Â statesÂ recipients of marketing emails and telephone calls are required to opt in to mailing lists.
However,Â charitiesÂ fall under the '˜legitimate interest'Â section of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidelines '“Â and The Mailing People, based in Farlington, Portsmouth, claims sources have reported these guidelines have been misunderstood.Â
Charities allegedlyÂ contacted theirÂ databasesÂ prior toÂ May 25, requesting they re-opt in toÂ communications, despiteÂ not being required to.
In turn, The Mailing People said they haveÂ heard claims charities'Â diligence has lost them supporters.Â '‹'‹
