Coronavirus: 'We're still open for business', says Portsmouth family firm Marriotts Furnishers

The company, which has been selling quality furniture and carpets to the people of Portsmouth and beyond for almost a century, is determined to keep serving customers.

Mark McCullough from Marriotts, of 91-103 New Road, said: 'We will strive to continue trading and offer a service to our customers. To do this, we have implemented some changes to our usual working routines.'

Liz Marriott and all the team at Marriotts will still be offering viewings at its showrooms but on an appointment-only basis, respecting guidelines on distancing and with extra hand sanitisers in place.

It will also offer remote viewing using various interfaces - internet, smartphone, e-mail and social media.

Mark continued: 'We have implemented a cleaning and disinfection regime to protect our customers and staff alike. We may have to change our opening times to allow time for extra cleaning needed.'

He added: 'We wish all our customers good luck and good health through these concerning times.'

Marriotts Furnishers was formed in 1926 by Ted Marriott. In those days most small retail furniture shops made their own bespoke furniture and Marriotts was no exception.

The company began by manufacturing, upholstering and cabinet-making. During the Second World War, with the family living in south Wales, the premises at 97 New Road were converted into an air raid wardens’ post.

The Marriotts returned post-war and the business grew. First 99 New Road was acquired and gradually other terraced houses either side were added to the portfolio until it spread to its current address – 91-103 New Road.

What has not changed in the company's 94-year history is Marriotts' desire to sell quality and keenly-priced furniture with a fantastic level of service to its customers.

Its extensive showrooms are filled with the latest designs, with a choice of a wide range of sofas, chairs, cabinets, dining room furniture, beds and bedroom ranges.

Marriotts also offers a comprehensive selection of quality carpets and rugs including wool twist piles, natural styles and woven Axminster carpets with a variation of styles and patterns to choose from.
