Scott’s Plaice, in Gosport, is in the top 50 of chippies, according to industry magazine Fry.

For owner Scott Turner, it is a huge honour as there are around 11,000 fish and chip shops open in the UK.

He said: ‘I was in shock when we got the letter. We weren’t expecting it as there are so many other fish and chip shops around the country.

‘I was really happy and got a big poster to show our customers.’

To enter the competition, Scott filled out a nomination form and sent it to Fry.

The shop, on Gregson Avenue, was then visited by a mystery shopper who looked at a number of criteria including taste, cleanliness, friendliness of the staff and the menu.

To get into the top 50, the chippy had to score more than 94 per cent.

Scott added: ‘We got the feedback and were really happy with the results.

‘The mystery shopper noted the cleanliness, the fact all the staff wore hats, uniforms and name badges and they really liked the taste of the food.’

Scott’s Plaice has been open since December and already has a huge customer base with numbers increasing on a regular basis. It is the first shop Scott has owned, although he has worked in the industry for years.

He said: ‘When our customers saw the poster about us being in the top 50, they didn’t seem too surprised which was a shock; they obviously thought we were good enough.

‘They think we are brilliant and our food is amazing.

‘For some of the customers, I don’t think they realise these sort of industry competitions exist, but they were pleased for us.’

When asked what makes his place stand out, Scott added: ‘The batter is really crispy and the chips are fluffy on the inside but crunchy on the outside.

‘We are also good value for money.’

To improve customer experience further, Scott’s Plaice has launched an app for people to order their food. They can log-on, order and pay and collect their food when they are ready. It also has weekly offers and the specials board.

Scott also runs weekly competitions on a Facebook page. Visit facebook.com/scottsplaicegosport.
