It said that since launching in October last year, more than 75,000 people have used the service, with more than 23 per cent of Portsmouth’s population taking an Uber trip.

It said that the average time it takes from tapping a button to getting a ride has fallen from more than eight minutes to under four minutes, and that licensed private hire drivers using the Uber app in Portsmouth have driven over 1.5m miles - enough trips to drive to the moon 6.3 times over.

Fred Jones, general manager for Uber Portsmouth, said: ‘It’s been a really exciting 12 months in Portsmouth during which we have launched three Uber products.

‘We’re delighted to have got so many people around the city more efficiently than ever before.

‘However the real stars are the many hundreds of professional drivers that have chosen to partner with us over the last year.’
