Inspirational Women of Portsmouth Awards are held to celebrate females of the city

SCORES of the most inspirational and extraordinary girls and women in the city came together for a night of celebration.

The second Inspirational Women of Portsmouth Awards took place at the Royal Maritime Club in Portsmouth, with 13 awards presented in the fields of the arts, inspirational young women, business, health, sports, education and community.

A panel of Trailblazers - themselves a tribe of remarkable women at the forefront of their industries - shortlisted finalists from over 190 nominations sent in by members of the public between November and February.

The event, hosted by Josh Breach and Sassy Harvey also provided an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the wealth of artistry and diversity in Portsmouth.

This included the Adult Urban Voice Group led by Amba Tremaine, a fashion show featuring local designers and curated by Naomi Gibbs of New Theatre Royal, dance performances by Neptune Girls, Portsmouth Chinese Dancers and the Afro-Fusion Dance group from the University of Portsmouth and a poem by artist-in-residence Elaine Hamilton.

It was organised by Pamodzi Creatives, a community interest company that collaborates on projects that challenge social injustices, which was founded by Roni Edwards.

Roni said: ‘We are humbled by Portsmouth's belief in our vision to celebrate women and their tribes through the nominees who trusted us to celebrate them and share a little of their inspirational journey. We are beyond grateful to the creative artists, donors, sponsors, supporters, volunteers and young apprentices from Portsmouth College and Portsmouth High School.’

The night raised £610 for Portsmouth Abuse and Rape Counselling Service, with the Lord Mayor David Fuller announcing a further donation of £500 on the night, to contribute to their important work of supporting survivors of abuse.

Winners included Janine Milburn, the mother of an 18-year-old who died from a drug overdose who has set up a drug awareness charity and Dianne Urquart from Family Church who regularly undertakes voluntary work in the community.

The event was made possible by funding from The Big Lottery Community Fund and Gunwharf Quays with sponsorship provided by the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council, Biscoe's Solicitors and Real Employment Law Advice.
