Now you can charge your phone while you are eating a Big Mac

The restaurant, in West Street, Havant, was closed for eight weeks to allow the £500,000 makeover to take place.

It has now reopened, and along with iPads on the tables, self-service tills and wireless mobile phone charging points. It also features table service.

The restaurant is one of 18 owned by franchisee Grant Copper.

He said: ‘We’re thrilled with the transformation because we’re committed to offering our customers more choice and fast service.

‘Technology has a huge role to play in all walks of life, including our customers’ eating experience, so the new technology we’ve introduced recognises the way people live their lives today.

‘The addition of table service enables customers to order at the self-order kiosk and then sit down at a designated zone to get served.

‘From mums coming in with their kids, to people having a working lunch, I expect the feedback to be positive.’

Mr Copper, from Copnor, started his McDonald’s career in 1982 aged 18 at the store in Commercial Road, Portsmouth.

He said: ‘When I started there were only six items on the menu – it has changed a lot in my time.’

Mr Copper, who now lives in Westbourne, started his first franchise in 2003 in Sittingbourne, Kent, before moving back to Portsmouth to take over five stores; Commercial Road, North End, Fratton, Cosham and Ocean Retail Park.

He now runs 18 restaurants across Portsmouth, West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including the newly-built store in North Harbour.

His restaurants contribute almost £19.3m to the local economy and he employs nearly 1,400 people – with 50 just at his Havant store.

So far, eight of his restaurants have the new look; Shoreham, Fareham, Chichester, Cosham, Fratton, Bedhampton, Havant and North Harbour.

He said he plans on upgrading his store in Ryde next, followed by Commercial Road in Portsmouth and Ocean Park early next year, then Fareham’s Newgate Lane, and Gosport in 2018.

Following a trial last year in 14 restaurants across England, table service proved popular with customers.

As a result, it is being rolled out to restaurants undergoing digital transformations like the one in Havant.

By the end of this year, more than 400 restaurants across the UK will offer table service to their customers.
