Research finds catching the bus is cheaper than driving

RESEARCH has found that commuters could save up to Â£2,000 a year by taking the bus instead of travelling to work by car.

A study undertaken by Stagecoach, Britain’s biggest bus and coach operator, which operates routes in Portsmouth, compared the weekly price of hopping on the bus with the cost of fuel and car parking for the same journeys.

And despite fuel prices being at their lowest for six years, it found that bus passengers would save an average of more than £90 a month.

Robert Montgomery, managing director of Stagecoach, said: ‘The average savings would pay a big chunk of people’s annual energy bills and, for some, it would fund the cost of a family holiday for a week in the sun in Florida’.

He added that bus travel costs are around 55 per cent cheaper than the same commute by car and that it is now easier to catch a bus with smart ticketing and bus tracking via smartphones.
