University of Portsmouth launches new degree in nutrition therapy as it partners with institution

THOSE looking to enrich their knowledge in health and nutrition will now be able to earn themselves a degree in the subject thanks to a new partnership between a university and a higher education institution.

The University of Portsmouth’s Faculty of Science and Health has joined with the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) to deliver higher education awards in nutrition.

The courses will start in September 2020.

The partnership has resulted in the design of two programmes validated by the university and institute, including BSc (Hons) Nutritional Therapy and GradDip Integrative Functional Nutrition.

The degree programme is developed from the institute’s long-standing diploma course combining the latest theoretical science of nutrition knowledge with clinical training.

A signing event took place in March at the university to celebrate the degree launch and partnership.

Sherria Hoskins, executive dean, Faculty of Science and Health at the university, said: ‘We are delighted to partner with the Institute for Optimum Nutrition. The Institute for Optimum Nutrition have been providing high quality nutritional therapy education for the last 35 years and their research-informed philosophy to learning aligns closely with the Faculty of Science and Health at the University of Portsmouth.

‘We look forward to a fruitful partnership with the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and to working closely with their staff and students in training the next generation of registered nutritional therapists.’

Founded in 1984 by Patrick Holford with the support of twice Nobel Prize winner Professor Linus Pauling, the Institute for Optimum Nutrition is an independent higher education institution and education charity that has been successfully educating nutritional therapists for over 35 years and is one of the most respected training bodies of its kind in Europe.

The university is partnered with a wide network of UK and international academic partners through which students can access the latest thinking, supported by world leading research, and gain a University of Portsmouth Higher Education award.

The Institute for Optimum Nutrition will now join a diverse list of education partnerships which includes Make Business, Drug Safety Research Unit and University Centre Sparsholt.
