Waterlooville refrigeration firm receives praise from MP during visit

Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery visited Business Edge Ltd in Westside View, Waterlooville, last week to find more about its operations.

The company, which employs 10 people, has developed an oil-free refrigeration and air conditioning compressor that is 46 per cent more efficient than current technology.

Business Edge has filed two international patents for the invention and it hopes to become part of the UK’s export drive.

Mr Hollingbery was told that, in Europe, 20 per cent of all energy is consumed by air conditioning and refrigeration systems, so the new compressor, which is also much quieter, smaller, lighter and makes less vibration, should make a big impact on electricity usage.

Managing director Mike Creamer said he also believes the technology could have military applications.

Mr Creamer gave Mr Hollingbery a tour of the operation last week.

Mr Hollingbery said: ‘This was a really exciting visit to a cutting edge company in my constituency that is on the cusp of making a big difference to energy consumption and it was a pleasure to learn more about what is going on, some of the challenges Mike and the team face and what the future might hold.

‘One thing was clear from my visit: this is just the type of business the UK must nurture, a business offering high technology and truly innovative products the world will want to buy

‘It was also interesting to see how the compressor could have applications for our armed forces, particularly the Royal Navy, and I know Mike was keen to explore this avenue while seeking investment for his product.’

Mr Creamer has been involved with air conditioning, refrigeration and mechanical engineering for almost 40 years.

He incorporated Business Edge Limited in 1990 to develop advanced refrigeration and air conditioning technologies.

He said: ‘We were delighted that George decided to visit Business Edge as soon as he became aware of our technology achievements and energy-saving objectives.

‘It was clear that he has considerable knowledge in this field and appreciates the huge potential of our oil-free compresssion technology.

‘George suggested that we keep him informed of our progress and we hope the exposure arising out of his visit might lead to our ultimate commercialisation of the technology.’
