Gosport secondary school just one of two schools causing Hampshire County Council concern

Brune Park Community School was placed into special measures earlier this year by Ofsted.

But Julia Vincent, executive head at the school, says she has been overwhelmed by the passion and hard work from all teaching staff and that students are adapting.

She said: ‘Schools are like large ships and this one is in the process of doing a U-turn and is beginning to pick up pace.

‘There are some aspects of the school which are excellent and that includes subjects such as English, engineering, drama and religious studies.

‘However, we know that results 
are not yet good enough and that 
is what we are working hard to achieve.

‘Schools in special measures improve rapidly, so current students and those in our catchment area transferring to the school will find improvements embedded during the next academic year.’

Mrs Vincent said that GCSE students have shown their commitment by staying late after school, and are backed by parents.

Brune Park in Military Road now aims to become an academy trust school.

The move is being supported by the county council following a meeting of the education advisory panel.

Councillor Peter Edgar, executive member of education for Hampshire County Council, said: ‘We’re behind the school’s decision to become an academy.

‘We work in partnership with the schools to deliver the best education in Hampshire, whether they become an academy or not.

‘We have always let school committees decide as schools have their own character and people at the centre know best.’
