For potential apprentices who want to learn new skills, earn good money, and find their own adventure, the Royal Navy could be the dream role.

Paid a competitive wage from day one, treated as a vital member of the crew, given incredible travel opportunities and experiences, and trained in vital skills sought after by in the civilian world, a Royal Navy apprenticeship is a career path like no other.

The MOD organisation has some pretty impressive statistics behind it – it has one of the highest completion rates of apprenticeships in the country, and is rated as by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’. It’s also a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer, making spaces highly contested and valued, and it’s easy to see why. Apprentices are mentored by highly skilled professionals, gain job-specific skills which will last them through their naval career and beyond on civvie street, and the chance to study for vocational qualifications.

All this, and a life at sea and touring the world, makes it an incredibly attractive proposition for school leavers – they recruit from age 16 – or adults looking for a career change.

How do their apprenticeships work?

A Royal Navy apprenticeship normally takes 12-18 months, depending on the role. But your apprenticeship is just the start – show potential, and you can progress quickly to a rewarding long term career. There are intermediate and accelerated roles, and around there are around 20 different apprenticeship types available each year. Many require no formal qualifications, but simply look for the right candidate to develop and thrive in the navy.

What careers can I train in?

Intermediate apprentices – ratings – form part of the RN’s main workforce, learn a trade, move through the ranks and can end up in officer training. Their salaries start at £18,500 during basic training increasing to £23,00 on completion of training, then up to a maximum of £56,000. Fast track apprentices will already have gained a level three college diploma or A-Levels in maths and physics.

Other benefits include travel, support with accommodation, ongoing training – including skydiving, scuba diving, mountaineering and skiing!
