School's sports day raises thousands for Sport Relief

Staff and students from the school took part in a day of sport designed to coincide with the annual television event which this year saw comedian Jo Brand complete a 135-mile ‘Hell of a Walk’ and Eddie Izzard run 27 marathons in 27 days.

The school invited people to come in wearing their sports kit and donate £1 to take part in the day of sport.

A total of £3,001.93 was raised by the school, whose students ran two miles by taking it in turns to run laps around the playground.

Children were sponsored by their family and friends to take part with one child, Daisie Sturman, raising £501 herself. In the afternoon the whole school joined in with an aerobic style workout followed by a Sport Relief Rally.

Daisie, age six, said: ‘I felt happy because all my teachers were proud of me. I felt happy to help people all over the world who don’t have things like clothes and homes.

‘It’s not fair that some people have lots of things and some people don’t.’

Tara Fancey, a Year 1 teacher at the school, said: ‘We are a charitable school that always encourage children to support charities however this is our biggest total to date.’

Catherine Harrison, schools engagement and fundraising manager at Comic Relief, said: ‘It is brilliant that Stamshaw Infant School got involved in Sport Relief this year and raised a fabulous £3001.93.

‘We really appreciate their support and it sounds like they had a great day. The money schools like Stamshaw Infant School raise this Sport Relief will make a massive difference to people living incredibly tough lives here at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest communities, so thank you, we think you’re amazing.’

This year’s Sport Relief appeal, run by the BBC and Comic Relief, raised £56, 838,844. Money raised is used in help the work of Comic Relief in the UK, Africa and the rest of the world, including in this area with Pompey in the Community, the Beneficial Foundation and Gosport Live at Home all being supported by the charity.
