Headteachers were delighted with the response and Alison Beane, the executive head of Mary Rose and Cliffdale Primary Academies said: ‘From the event, we have recruited three outstanding teachers who will work in our special schools from September 2016.’

It was also a great opportunity for ex-secondary teachers to get further information about the new return to teaching scheme that the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance successfully won through the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).

The scheme will support 20 secondary teachers get back to teaching and help address some of the subject shortages the industry currently faces.

Lynn Nicholls, School Direct and ITT Lead said: ‘It’s great that the NCTL has this pilot project.

‘Many teachers who leave the profession to raise a family or work in another sector usually just need support on curriculum changes, up-to-date classroom practice and what Ofsted deems as outstanding practitioners.

‘It’s all about confidence- boosting, as these teachers have the skills and most importantly the desire to teach.’

Ex-teacher Helen, from Portsmouth, said: ‘As a specialist science person who has been out of teaching for a number of years raising a family, I am looking forward to being supported back into teaching, on a programme that is specifically designed to meet my needs.’

Working collaboratively, the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance, schools across the city and Portsmouth City Council (PCC) are attracting outstanding teachers to the area.

Helen DuCane, PCC schools adviser of recruitment and retention, said: ‘Attendees said they loved our waterfront city and are keen to move into the area. We are planning to repeat this recruitment event in the summer term.’

The Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance is running a return to teaching information event today from 4pm-6pm at Portsmouth Academy for Girls for those interested in returning to teach science, maths, geography, history and English.
