University of Portsmouth lecturer praised for role in fast tracking coronavirus research

Dr Simon Kolstoe, senior lecturer and ethics advisor at the institution, is working with Public Health England (PHE) to support the rapid research response into the coronavirus pandemic whilst ensuring standards are maintained.
Dr Kolstoe is chair of PHE’s Research Ethics and Governance of Group (Regg), which was established to help regulate the work of 5,500 scientists, researchers and public health professionals. The role of Regg is to provide an independent review of the quality of research and the welfare of participants taking part in PHE studies.

Hide AdThe regulatory body has seen its role rise to prominence as PHE has launched 22 studies into the spread, affects and potential treatments of coronavirus.
Dr Kolstoe said: ‘Research is key for addressing the challenges of Covid-19, but even in a public emergency research needs to be ethical, rigorous and transparent.’

Providing a rapid review of research is crucial in the process of fast-tracking studies to provide the government and NHS with crucial evidence based scientific knowledge to help tackle the pandemic.
Dr Kolstoe added: ‘Universities have been playing a vital role supporting the government in providing independent advice and expertise during this crisis. It has been an honour to help PHE in this way.’

Professor Bernie Hannigan, director of research, translation and innovation for PHE, said: ‘Simon has led the provision of a high quality, responsive review service and has been greatly valued by PHE.
‘We would like to thank the University of Portsmouth for making him available to fulfil this role.’
