The Future Portsmouth event, in partnership with Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Portsmouth City Council, brings together businesses, education and training partners and public sector colleagues to encourage collaboration and innovation.

The free online event on Friday February 11 will provide information on programmes and projects targeting skills and talent needs within the city, regeneration plans for the city, and many other topics.

It also features a keynote address from the leader of Portsmouth City Council, who will be sharing his plans for development in the city, including the Free Port and post-Covid recovery.

To book your place, search for Future Portsmouth – The Big Business Talk on Eventbrite.

The team will also be promoting the wide range of degree apprenticeships that are on offer from the University.

With 19 different apprenticeships in its portfolio and a number of new standards in development, the University has just over 1,000 live apprentices: an incredible increase from just 7 in 2016.

Claire Middleton, Degree Apprenticeship Manager, said: ‘Each year National Apprenticeship Week has a theme, and this year it is ‘Build the Future’. All of our events have a focus on how employers can build a more skilled workforce and how apprentices can build an exciting career for themselves.

‘Post Covid-19, most employers are having difficulties in attracting and recruiting skilled staff to grow their businesses, so apprenticeships are seen to be a good way of home growing talent and filling skills gaps.’

The University-sponsored Apprenticeship Bus will also visit every secondary school in Portsmouth, bringing information and apprentices into schools to answer questions about the range of apprenticeship programmes and to explain what degree apprenticeships are.

How you can join the fight against plastic pollution

Businesses and individuals are being sought to take part in what is believed to be the world’s first programme of city-wide plastic pollution surveys.Working in collaboration with Jetsam Tech, University researchers are asking people to survey plastic pollution in their local area on the first weekend of the month between February and May.The data gathered will help to better understand the patterns and movement of plastic waste in Portsmouth to develop interventions to reduce plastic entering the environment. These interventions could have a noticeable impact on the city making it a cleaner and safer place to live.To find out more about the project visit port.ac.uk/mapp.
