2 new Covid deaths recorded in Hampshire care homes

THERE have been fewer coronavirus related deaths in Hampshire care homes in the most recent period recorded - compared to previous weeks.

According to data from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) there were two care home deaths in the Hampshire County Council area between December 5 and 11 - and none in Portsmouth or Southampton.

This was fewer than the week before when there were three across the county, and two weeks' previous when there were seven.

But overall there has been an increase in the number of Covid deaths in Hampshire care homes in recent months.

Before the end of September the last Covid death in the Hampshire County Council area was on August 26, and weekly figures remained low after June.

In Portsmouth the last recorded death in care homes before November was on August 13.

And in Southampton there has not been a care home death since October 1.

The overall trend nationwide has seen coronavirus deaths in care homes started to rise again in November following a couple of months where daily figures were down to single figures.

The Hampshire County Council area has still seen the largest number of care home deaths linked to Covid in the country with a total since records began on April 10 of 483.

In Portsmouth there has been a total of 42 and in Southampton there have been 63.

Between December 5 and 11 there were 470 Covid deaths in England - a rise of 40 since the week before. The country’s total since April 10 is 17,508.
