Gosport's Danny takes on challenge in memory of much-missed dad who died suddenly

IT WAS just a normal evening in front of the TV when John Bohannan suddenly died of a heart condition - one that he never even knew about.

The 54-year-old, from Gosport, tragically died in April this year while at a family barbecue.

Now his son, Danny, is urging people to get their hearts checked so that they don't suffer the same fate.

Danny Bohannan, 26 and also from Gosport, is doing 14 fundraising events in 14 months in memory of his father, supporting the British Heart Foundation, Heart UK and Heart Research UK.

He says that the first sign of his father being unwell was his heart stopping as he died - and doesn't want other families to go through a similar experience.

Danny said: '˜When somebody is ill you have a bit of time to prepare yourself for it, but with my dad dying like this there is so much that I never had the chance to say to him.

'˜It had been such a normal day up until that point, and that's what we are struggling to come to terms with.

'˜I don't want anyone else to have to go through that.'

This weekend, Danny will be taking on his third fundraiser, cycling from Gosport Ferry terminal around to Portsmouth Harbour - via both Gosport Borough FC and Portsmouth FC's grounds - before taking on The Drop at the Spinnaker Tower.

The events are part of Danny's ongoing campaign, called #CheckYourHeart.

'˜The more I speak to people the more people say that they have heard of it happening to others' said Danny.

'˜It's something that has become really important to me - if it happened to dad it could happen to anyone.

'˜All it takes is a visit to your GP to see if there's any underlying heart issues.'

Danny says he is confident about the bike ride - but a little bit nervous about taking on The Drop.

But he won't be alone, as Danny is joined by his fiancee, Charlotte Blackwell, and other friends on his journey.

He said: '˜We're getting as many people involved with this as possible - everything we do is getting people healthier as well.

'˜It's just an amazing feeling to have their support. I'm not too great with heights though, so that's certainly going to be interesting!'
