Group from Portsmouth to walk 20 miles for Alzheimer's Society

A GROUP of people are walking 20 miles to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

Michelle Povey, from Fratton, is taking on the challenge with her partner and family to raise money for the charity which helps people with dementia.

The 28-year-old decided to organise the event after her nan was diagnosed with the illness and her partner’s grandad died from it in March.

Michelle said: ‘Last year we took part in the Alzheimer’s Society walk and it was good raising money for them.

‘But we wanted to do something on a larger scale that would get more donations.

‘So we decided to take on the walk.’

Happening this Sunday, the event will see the group walk from St Mary’s Stadium, home of Southampton FC, to Pompey’s Fratton Park. It is expected to take around seven hours.

Michelle added: ‘I haven’t done anything like this before so I am a little nervous. It’s going to be tough but we are prepared to complete it.

‘My partner’s grandad was a huge Pompey fan so we wanted to finished the walk at Fratton Park.’

The group have already smashed their £300 target by raising £480.

Michelle said: ‘It is amazing that we have raised so much already.

‘We’ve had a lot of support from friends and family.’

This week is Dementia Awareness Week with charities and organisations supporting people with the illness.
