Open day will show rehabilitation classes for Portsmouth stroke survivors

Healthhub.co is holding the event during one of its classes at St Cuthbert’s Centre, in Copnor.

Those attending will be able to see the Exercise Following Stroke classes, which are designed up help people who have had a stroke and need rehabilitation once they have left hospital.

The project is held at the centre, on Lichfield Road, and is funded by The Big Lottery.

Eight instructors across Hampshire were recently trained to provide the classes and Jacqui Der Karapetian and Sally Carter are delivering them in Portsmouth following a successful 12-week trial last year.

Jacqui said: ‘It is absolutely imperative that stroke survivors continue with specialised stroke-specific exercises in order to maintain and improve on the results achieved by hospital rehabilitation services.

‘We are running this open event to show patients and their carers that there is help after hospital discharge.’

Individuals are required to be referred to the programme by their GP and referral forms will be available at the event.

There is no cost to the referring GP, who can recommend the programme for stroke survivors. The patients need to be able to walk to join the classes, even if it is at a slow pace.

The open day is on Monday, May 8 between 1.30pm and 3pm.
