Woman who started 20-year fight for answers on care at Gosport hospital says she has glimmer of hopeÂ

Gillian MacKenzie was one of dozens of family members who attended a meeting on Tuesday giving families an update since the publishing of the Gosport Independent Panel's report in June.

The 84-year-old started the 20-year fight for answers after her mother Gladys Richards died at Gosport War Memorial Hospital in 1998 following a hip operation.

She was at the Bury Road hospital for rehabilitation but died 10 days later.

The meeting held at Ferneham Hall also gave relatives the chance to ask questions to Assistant Chief Constable Nick Downing, from Kent Police, who is leading an assessment into the report's findings.

As previously reported, Gosport Independent Panel's report found at least 456 patients had their lives shortened after being administered opioids without medical justification between 1989 and 2001.

Bishop Jones said in the findings there was a '˜total disregard for human life'.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms MacKenzie from Eastbourne, said: '˜I now have a glimmer of hope following the meeting.

'˜ACC Downing seems like he will take his assessment seriously and will look at it from all angles.

'˜I will not accept corporate liability, it needs to be individual criminal charges.'
