The powered machine was the first to be delivered to the council and given to Mrs Gander to test drive around the town centre.

She said: ‘I do not think my male colleagues thought much of it when I first started. I suppose I am a bit unusual,’ she added.

Before the machine she had worked with a brush and shovel.

Borough engineer and surveyor Michael Snell said: ‘We are very pleased.

‘I think everybody can see the difference.’
