The all-electric SUV is the first car from the newly spun-off Ioniq sub-brand, which will focus purely on electric vehicles.

It is also the first car from the Hyundai Motor Group to be built on its new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) which will underpin future Ioniq, Hyundai and Kia EVs.

The Ioniq 5 is a mid-sized SUV set to rival the Volkswagen ID.4 but Hyundai says its distinctive sharp-edged design “provides a unique experience that can only be enjoyed in dedicated BEVs”.

Sticking closely to the 45 concept car from 2019, the Ioniq 5 features “Parametric Pixels” with rectangular arrays of tiny pixel-like lights which, according to Hyundai, reflects the digital technology within.

A clamshell bonnet aims to create a “clean high-tech” look by minimising shut lines around the car and the Ioniq 5 features huge 20-inch turbine-style alloy wheels - the biggest fitted to a Hyundai group EV.

“IONIQ 5 presents an all-new customer experience through innovative EV design that is evocative of the icon that established Hyundai’s design DNA,” said SangYup Lee, head of Hyundai’s global design centre. “Beginning with IONIQ 5, our dedicated BEV lineup brand will redefine the relationship between people and their cars, establishing a new standard against which all BEV design experiences will be measured.”

Hyundai has yet to reveal technical details of the Ioniq 5 but has previously said that the cars based on the E-GMP platform will be capable of up to 310 miles on a single charge and charge to 80 per cent in as little as 18 minutes thanks to 400V/800V charging.

The Ioniq 5 also features bi-directional vehicle to load (V2L) technology which allows owners to use their car to power other devices including, according to a recent PR stunt, an electric oven or treadmill.

The Ioniq 5 is the first of three EVs due from the brand in the next four years, with a larger Ioniq 7 SUV and Ioniq 6 sports saloon both expected to be on sale by 2024.
