Revealed: The curry house voted best in West Sussex
A popular restaurant has been voted the best in West Sussex at the Curry Life Awards in London.
The Mahaan in Montague Street, West Worthing, beat off strong competition to scoop the ‘best of’ by judges at the gala event attended by more than 600 people.
The family-run restaurant has won several awards in the past and owner Askor Ali was delighted with the latest addition to his trophy cabinet.
Its most popular dish is a homemade Naga curry made with hot chillies and it runs a popular membership club giving discounts to regular customers
Askor said: “We are very proud of the award because there are a lot of good restaurants in the area producing great food. We want to just keep improving and see how far we can go.”
The annual Curry Life Awards celebrate the contribution of the multi-billion pound curry industry, which includes more than 12,000 restaurants in the UK.
One man who has probably visited and eaten in more Indian restaurants than anyone else is Syed Belal Ahmed, event organiser and editor of Curry Life magazine.
“Indian food has improved dramatically during the past 20 years to the extent that we are now seeing Michelin stars being awarded.
“That’s a wonderful achievement and we want our chefs to keep raising the bar because the curry made in this country is unique and has developed independently of its birthplace on the Indian subcontinent.”
Chief Guest, Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, Secretary of State for International Development, said: “The Curry Life Annual Awards ceremony is a great opportunity to celebrate the enormous talent that is on display around the country … and the success of the Great British Curry!”
Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder and Chairman of Cobra Beer, which helps sponsor the event said he was “in awe of what the chefs do” and applauded them for producing “some of the most exotic food in the world at the cheapest prices.”
Guests of the Curry Life Awards were treated to some spectacular entertainment in a glittering awards ceremony, hosted by celebrity master chef finalist, journalist and broadcaster Louise Minchin.
