Food review: Bangerz 'n' Burgerz, Havant

Bangerz ’n’ Burgerz has not long been dishing up its casual, diner-style delights at Havant. It only threw open its West Street doors in 2021.

That was after the storming success of its sister restaurant in Southsea, which has since led to the opening of six more venues along the south coast – including in Port Solent.

Dish Detective went to its Osborne Road eatery in 2019, when it was Burgerz ‘n’ Brews – without the presence of its array of specialty hotdogs.

Since then, it’s caught the attention of DD’s gluttonous appetite with new additions to the menu and an extensive vegan menu – this is certainly a big tick for bringing a big group of friends.

It’s yet another dry and sunny day when I find myself visiting.

There’s been ample opportunity to fire up the barbecue with the scorching heat this summer. And on a quiet Tuesday evening DD and companion can think of nothing better than an uncomplicated, slap-up meal, minus the utensils and hard work.

Burgerz ‘n’ Bangerz brings something new to the town. It’s modern, with graffiti splattered across every wall, with minimalist – yet bright – lighting which makes for Instagram-worthy food snaps.

We are the only people in the restaurant, which is surprising because it’s central to the shops and other eateries in town.

But this is definitely not a complaint. Very quickly we are served our order of two unlimited Pepsi Max drinks (£2.99). Since we have the whole restaurant to ourselves, we decide to perch on a table opposite the kitchen where we can see the food being prepared.

There are times I find myself weighing up two or three options when eating out. But not today. The menu is divided into five clear sections; burgers, hotdogs, fries, wings and fries. DD knows exactly what they are in for.

Offerings include staples like the American-style hotdog and the German hotdog (with bratwurst sausage) down to the more extravagant Smokin’ Asian hotdog.

For burger lovers, the list is longer. On top of the classics are The Undertaker with three patties, bacon, pickles, hash browns and crispy chicken and for spice lovers, the Mexican Heat Wave. There are desserts like ice cream and brownies.

DD opts for the Tot Dog, a pork frank loaded with ‘Tater Tots’, American cheese, sweet chilli sauce, mayo and sesame seeds (£8.99). Rustic fries (£3.49) accompany it, which we share.

The hotdog arrives quickly, as does my companion’s Speedy Gonzales beef hotdog (£8.99) which comes with crushed tortillas chips, Jalapenos and mild tomato sauce.

Both are piping hot, portion sizes are large, and the combination of crispy potato-style pieces with a sesame coated hotdog works surprisingly well. My companion’s verdict: ‘Delicious, spicy and just the right amount of sauce’.

This is an ideal social evening which does what it says on the tin. Without doubt we’ll be back to test the burgers and wings.
