Thailand Cafe and Takeaway, Southsea | Takeaway review

On a cold and dark Friday night in winter, there is nothing better than a takeaway in the comfort of your own home while wearing old jogging bottoms.

We are lovers of Thai food in our household bubble and so we opt for the Thailand Takeaway and Cafe on Albert Road in Southsea.

Not a restaurant we have tried before so we are excited to see how it holds up against competitors.

Starters are a sharing affair and we opt for Satay Gai (chicken satay £4.95), Peak Gai Tord (chicken wings £4.55) and Pla Mueg Song Kreung (garlic squid £4.85).

For mains we opt for Thailand Makham sauce with duck breast (£7.95) with stir fried noodles (£3.85) and pork Gang Panang (£7.35).

Living in the modern world of technology we order it all on our phone in a matter of seconds via a third-party delivery app and we watch as the clock counts down for our delivery driver to knock the door (and then stand two metres away).

The food is quick but unfortunately there has been a mix up and the delivery driver has given our meal to his last customer nearby.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the meals can’t just be switched so we are told to keep the food and our order will also be sent to us.

It arrives just 30 minutes later with a note from the takeaway apologising for the incident – which was not their fault at all but appreciated nonetheless.

And so, dear reader, we are now faced with an enormous amount of food.

Fried garlic squid is something that has seeped on to a lot of menus but this is really top end.

The chicken satay was delicious but a little more of the sauce would really make it zing. The wings were crunchy with a tangy sauce.

I try my partner ’s main dish choosings first.

They have gone for green Thai chicken curry (£7.35), Thailand on Fire prawns (£7.95), Krateum Plick Tai (garlic prawns £7.95) and Kao Kati (coconut rice £2.75).

The green Thai curry is an oldie but a goodie and the takeaway has really whacked up the spice a notch which Dish Detective enjoys.

The Krateum Plick Tai was lovely matched with the Kao Kati but I think may have been slightly lacking in flavour without the coconut pairing.

With a name like Thailand on Fire, I could see the tears forming in my partner’s eyes.

I won’t lie, it was spicy.

If our neighbours are reading this please know we very much approved of your Friday night takeaway.

Now for our own choices.

The crispy duck in tamarind sauce paired with the plain noodles is a winner.

The pork gang panang I am reliably informed is creamy, coconutty and slightly hot.

And with that concludes the immense feast.

This isn’t a Thai restaurant we had heard about before but it is one we will be shouting about now.
