THIS WEEK IN 1972: The theatre knows how to fill its seats

Chichester Festival Theatre’s ended a successful 19-week season with the average capacity of 93 per cent – believed to be the highest for any theatre in the country. 

Top of the list was The Lady’s Not For Burning, starring Richard Chamberlain and Anna Calder-Marshall, with 96 per cent.

Mr Fairweather, the press officer at the theatre since it was founded in 1961, said: ‘Our policy has always been to have the best we can get in the way of stars, directors and other staff and it’s paid off.’
