Q: How and when can I take cuttings of my heather. It is becoming bare in the centre. FL, Rowlands Castle.

A: Now. Cut off shoots 2in long and, using your thumb nail, scrape off half the leaves so you won’t bury any of them. Cut just below each node (leaf joint) and insert into an ericaceous mix but with 50 per cent added sand. You could get some 12in wreath wires, bend them into a U shape and bend the tips of your heather over the bare parts. Top dress with the same compost.

Q: Can I split my hosta now? It looks difficult. Is there an easy way? VN, Cosham.

A: Dig out the entire plant and use two garden forks back to back. Thrust the forks right through the clump and push the handles together breaking the clump into the number of divisions you require. Or use an old bread knife and carve your way through. Keep the roots moist all the time.

Q: I have tried to grow a sweet pea from seeds with no success, the variety is Air Raid Warden, I know it’s an old variety but we love it. Could the variety be worn out? SL, Denmead.

A: It is a good one and the seed firm you bought it from will send you another pack if you send them an SAE. When sowing again shake the seeds with sharp sand in a screw-top jar for five minutes. This will break down the seeds’ coating. This variety has a very thick covering.
