Go fossil hunting

The rugged and majestic coastline that stretches along Compton Bay is a paradise for avid fossil hunters. Renowned as 'the richest source of dinosaur remains in Europe,' this geological wonderland offers a remarkable opportunity to unearth treasures from a prehistoric world. It's a place where the past comes alive, where every pebble and stone may hold the secrets of eons gone by.

A short venture westward will lead you to Hanover Point, where awe-inspiring fossilized foot casts await eager discoverers. These massive imprints, preserved in the rocks along the beach, provide a real connection to the giants that once roamed these shores.

Connect with nature

Nestled in the heart of the Isle of Wight, the picturesque Alverstone Mead encompasses four nature reserves – Alverstone Mead, Bensteads Marsh, Youngwoods Copse, and Bretts Meadow. This tranquil sanctuary is a stone's throw away from the seaside town of Sandown and is a haven for fascinating creatures and plant life.

One of the highlights of this nature reserve is the chance to encounter the Isle of Wight's beloved red squirrels. These iconic creatures, known for their endearing charm, find refuge here, and a dedicated squirrel hide allows you to observe them up close. Peek through the hide's windows and marvel at these delightful animals as they go about their daily routines, providing an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

Monkey around

Visit Monkey Haven, the Isle of Wight's acclaimed primate rescue centre where animals find happiness, and you will find delight. Meet rescued animals, engage with the wildlife during keeper talks and feeds, learn the stories of these captivating animals, many of whom were saved from distressing circumstances, and discover how they came to call the Haven home.

The sanctuary's mission is to offer a forever home to rescued animals. Endangered Diana monkeys now share their lives with Colobus monkeys. Visit the resident Cotton-Top Tamarins – who were rescued from tiny birdcages and have taken social media by storm – and meet Xhabu, a beloved Siamang gibbon.
