Can you name the players and the locations of these two teams?
Two weeks ago Katherine Pond died. Along with her late husband Lesley they were one of the earliest families to live on the new council estate of Leigh Park, moving into their new house in 1950.
They lived there for the rest of their lives.
At that time the house in what is now Purbrook Way was surrounded by fields.
When clearing out the house, her daughter Janet found several photographs of football and cricket teams and I have reproduced two of them here today hoping that someone might recognise the teams and where the locations are.
Here we see a smart cricket XI of the 1950s. All are wearing proper cricket boots and turn-ups in their trousers.
Les Pond is the tall chap in the back row forth from the right.
The woman, bottom left, is his wife Katherine always known as Cathy who, as mentioned, died recently.
She was the tea’s scorer and no doubt assisted with the teas, which all home cricket teams supplied.
Does anyone recognise the team or the location where they are posing?
Possibly taken at Hooks Lane Recreation Ground can anyone recognise the football team. Les Pond is second from left, standing.
All are wearing large football boots with shinguards for protection. The goalie, as they were called, is wearing a thick, roll-neck sweater.
This was number one pitch located alongside the dressing rooms which were the former kitchens and galley when part of Fraser Camp.
As I remember, there were three pitches and two rugby pitches plus a cricket square on the recreation ground.
This pitch is now the main Havant Rugby Club pitch with a stand to the rear.
All the football pitches and cricket square have sadly been given over to rugby.
Another possession found in the house was this 12x10in painting of a public house in Old Portsmouth in 1925.
It was painted by I Burnett and shows the Ruby pub on the corner of Lombard Street and St Thomas’s Street.
It closed shortly after it was the subject of the painting.
I am glad to say the building is still standing as a private residence.
