Canopy holes in kerbs give clue to photo's location

At first I wasn't sure about the location of the picture above.

My instinct said ‘High Street, Old Portsmouth’, but then I began to have doubts.

However, I still kept coming back to those canopies, their supports and the holes in the kerbs to steady them.

The only place in the city which I knew had those was High Street.

In fact you can still see the remains of those sockets on the edge of the pavement in front of the Anglican cathedral.

Most of these buildings were destroyed in the Second World War and all that remains of these shops are the indentations for the sun shades.

But still I was not convinced until I studied the very top left of the picture and glimpsed... the tower of the cathedral.
